This session will prepare you to address key sales and marketing functions critical to the success of your business venture. You will benefit from focused discussions on market selection and segmentation, sales channel definition and development, sales methodology, developing engaging presentations and marketing fundamentals.

Session II – Understanding Cap Table Dynamics - Presented by Brent Bullock, Perkins Coie

This session will assist you with the development and design of your business and will educate you on legal issues and capital management strategies. Specific topics will include selecting the right legal entity, equity structure, pre-money valuation, capital table dynamics, and liquidation analysis.

Session III – Understanding Financial Statements - Presented by Jared Holum, Perkins & Co.

This session will provide you with an overview of the components involved in financial statements. In addition to an understanding of the usefulness of each type of financial statement, you will learn to decipher book versus taxed based accounting, and will also learn to interpret key financial ratios applicable to your business.

Session IV - Ask the Expert Panel

You will get a chance to ask key questions of a panel of experts, including an attorney, a CPA, a sales & marketing professional, a venture capitalist, and an entrepreneur. The panel will expand on the topics covered in previous sessions, but will also cover key issues not part of the curriculum.

Ray King of AboutUs wins the award for individual achievement. Jama Software, Monsoon, and Motorcycle Superstore are Selected as this year’s award winners in company categories

Sept. 24, 2009, Portland, Ore. — The Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) announced the winners of the 2009 OEN Tom Holce Entrepreneurship Awards during its 16th annual awards ceremony. The ceremony honored finalists in four categories: OEN Entrepreneurship Award for Individual Achievement; OEN Development Stage Company of the Year; OEN Working Capital Stage Company of the Year; and OEN Growth Stage Company of the Year.

Ray King of AboutUs was selected as the winner of the 2009 OEN Entrepreneurship Award for Individual Achievement. “Ray has successfully led AboutUs.org based in Portland, Ore. to become one of the top 720 websites in the world. The site is garnering more than 9.2 million unique visitors per month,” said Bob Sternberg, judging chair of the OEN Tom Holce Awards for Entrepreneurship. “Ray is one of the bright stars shining in the Northwest entrepreneurial community.”

The winner of the 2009 OEN Development Stage Company of the Year is Jama Software of Portland, Oregon.

Led by CEO and co-founder Eric Winquist, Jama Software makes Contour, an easy–to–use, web-based software that helps companies collaborate together and manage the product development requirements during the entire evolution of a product, from idea to execution. The company boasts a strong executive team and as part of their community service, they have made 100 micro loans through Kiva.

The winner of the 2009 OEN Working Capital Company of the Year is Monsoon Inc. of Portland, OR. Led by CEO/founder Kanth Gopalpur, Monsoon provides a powerful, scalable online marketplace selling solution. Key to the company’s success is the dynamic pricing engine that was named the 2009 Winner of the Star Developer Award by eBay.  Monsoon has a strong commitment to the community. Monsoon matches employee donations to any charity. They also have an on-site employee store where everyone donates goods and new employees learn how to use the Monsoon software to sell those goods on line. All profits go to the charity adopted by Monsoon (Impact Northwest).

Monsoon’s strategy has been to focus on profitability and stability over top line growth. This strategy has Monsoon on track to achieve $8 million in revenues this year and it anticipates $17-18 million in revenue in three years. When customers succeed, Monsoon succeeds.

The winner of the 2009 OEN Growth Category Company of the Year is the MotorCycle Superstore of Medford, OR. Led by CEO Don Becklin, Motorcycle Superstore sells motorcycle gear, apparel parts and accessories via the internet.  As the clear leader in the motorcycle gear and accessories e-commerce space, Motorcycle Superstore has recently landed in position #223 on the Internet Retailers list of the Top 500 e-Retailers, an improvement of 73 positions from 2008.  Motorcycle Superstore serves over one million unique monthly visitors and is on pace to hit $75 million in sales in 2009. In a time of economic uncertainty, Motorcycle Superstore is on track to achieve 70% year-over-year growth in 2009.  This growth can be attributed to several factors, including significantly improved customer acquisition programs, refined customer relationship management processes, superior customer service and overall operations.

“This year we have had an exceptionally strong group of nominees. This is a testament to the strength and creativity of Oregon companies and their ability to focus their efforts and to survive in a down economy,” said Brenda Meltebeke, OEN Tom Holce Entrepreneurship Awards Committee chair and partner at Ater Wynne LLP.

“OEN celebrates the recipients of this year’s awards who have all been successful because of their business strategy, the strength of their executive teams, and support for the communities in which they work and live,” said Linda Weston, executive director of OEN. “We applaud all the companies that participated in the 16th Annual OEN Tom Holce Awards for Entrepreneurship.  They are all winners.”

The winners were chosen from 14 finalists by the OEN award judging committee, chaired by Bob Sternberg. The panel of judges included David de Fiebre, Rita Hansen, Rick Waldron, Don Douglas, Jon Down, Doug Fieldhouse, Kent Holce, Mark Holloway, Judy Johnston, Charla Mathwick, Jim Miller, Milt Mittelstedt, Tim Morgan, Kathy Sego, Kathryn Shimabukuro, Stephanie Sparkman, Jim Wilson, Rob Wiltbank and Mike Wright.

Sixty-four companies from throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington were nominated for the Awards, and were narrowed to the 14 finalists after hundreds of hours of due diligence, including site visits and face-to-face interviews. A comprehensive list of winners and finalists follows.

If you haven't already read the great post from Mike Berkely on the Silicon Florist Blog - go do so!  Rick Turoczy invited Mike to post his thoughts on the state of web entrepreneurship.

Here's the first section and a link to Silicon Florist post:

"Since putting SplashCast to rest a few months ago, I’ve finally had time to reconnect with the entrepreneur community here in Portland, as well as in the Bay Area and NYC.  I’ve packed my days full of coffee, apricot scones, phone calls, and meetings… lots of meetings.  I’ve talked to dozens of entrepreneurs and investors.

Two themes have surfaced in this process.

First, we are in front of a new wave of web innovation. It’s fuelled by the simultaneous emergence of location-aware mobile devices (GPS on iPhones, etc) and real-time, one-to-many communication tools (Twitter, etc).  For the first time, information about your life in the physical world (where you live, work, workout, eat, shop, drink, etc) can be readily known and indexed in the virtual world.  Mix that with real-time, always-on communication among friends, colleagues, local retailers and businesses, and we’ve got some amazing opportunities to chew on.  A few start-ups getting early traction here are Foursquare, redbeacon, and Portland’s ForkFly.

I think we’ve entered the next chapter in the evolution of the Internet.  On the heels of the now-passé “Web 2.0” era, we’ve embarked on what esteemed VC Fred Wilson calls the “Now Media” era.  FWIW, I don’t like the “Now Media” moniker because it captures only the time dimension, leaving out the geographic dimension.  I’d prefer something like “Here & Now Media”, which of course is too long and clunky to ever stick… but you get the point: for the first time, the Internet is reaching beyond pixels on a screen and into the real, physical world.

Second, I am observing that most entrepreneurs aren’t seeing the “forest through the trees.” They are so focused on the content of their business—their product, web site, iPhone app, user experience, etc—that they aren’t paying attention to the business itself.  Perhaps this is a timeless issue, one that has always challenged entrepreneurs.  But my theory is that a disastrous economy reinforces this tendency, since ramping revenue is so much harder now than it was just a few years ago."

Take your understanding of the federal SBIR/STTR program to the next level. This half-day workshop will teach you the critical requirements for creating a competitive Phase I proposal for a Small Business Innovation Research grant or a Small Business Technology Transfer grant. The program sets aside $2 billion annually to fund technology commercialization, and is an important funder of R&D within start-up technology and science firms. This workshop will help you decide if you have an SBIR/STTR proposal that can win.

Defining Your Winning Phase I Proposal will take you to the next level in determining if this is the opportunity to help fund your innovation. It will go over program details that program managers don't usually tell you. And it will help you decide whether you can create a competitive proposal.

Workshop Details: The workshop will be interactive with opportunities for discussion and questions. Participants will learn:

  • Pre-qualification questions: Is SBIR/STTR right for your firm? Do you have a true innovation? Will your team be seen as credible?
  • The nuts and bolts of program rules, eligibility requirements, and general differences among agencies
  • How can you avoid learning the hard way?
  • How to get ready to write a Phase I SBIR/STTR proposal by honing your story themes and approach
  • The ins and outs of producing a competitive Phase I SBIR/STTR proposal
  • How to avoid losing
  • And critical dos and don'ts of electronic submission
